A Prime-Time Celebration For the Motor City’s ‘Local 4’

NORTHVILLE, MICH. — On March 4, 1947, regular programming debuted on a television station carrying the WWDT call letters. It was a historic occasion, becoming the first visual broadcast operation based in Michigan. A few months later, the station owned by The Detroit News adopted new call letters matching its NBC-affiliated radio operation, WWJ.

In 1978, due to cross-ownership rules, a change came to that historic TV facility. Since then, it has been known as WDIV-4, today Graham Media Group‘s flagship property.

Graham has been celebrating the 75th anniversary of WDIV, branded as “LOCAL 4” across Detroit, for several weeks. Now, it’s preparing a prime-time, two-hour documentary airing Friday (11/4) narrated by a radio legend — 86-year-old Dick Purtan.
