A Little Less ‘Activa’ In Upstate South Carolina

Among the many emerging Hispanic markets across the U.S. is Greenville, S.C. In response to this growth, Mahan Janbakhsh‘s TBLC Holdings in December 2015 converted a Class A FM serving the city from Easley, S.C. to regional Mexican.

Today, it is the region’s home for personality-fueled programming including Univision Radio’s El Bueno, la Mala y el Feo; El Show de Piolín and the Entravision signature afternoon program Erazno y la Chokolata.

Soon, those shows will disappear from this FM signal, as Janbakhsh is selling it.

For $850,000, TBLC is selling WTOB-FM 103.9 in Easley for $850,000.

A $42,500 deposit has been made to TBLC by the buyer, Radio Training Network.

The deal includes the transmitter site for WTOB, a rural parcel a stone’s throw from Tiny Town, a historic Christmas-themed attraction beloved by locals.

Serving as RTN’s legal counsel in the transaction is A. Wray Fitch of Gammon & Grange.

What does the future hold for WTOB? It is poised to become a sibling of WLFJ-FM — a noncommercial Christian Contemporary station branded as “HisRadio.” WLFJ offers distinct programming on its HD2, HD3 and HD4 subchannels, and one of these offerings could end up on WTOB.

The likely choice? The HD4 “His Radio Talk,” which can be heard to the south of WHRT-FM 91.9 in Cokesbury, S.C., and locally via FM translator W225AZ at 92.5, reaching a small portion of Greenville.

Until August, “His Radio Talk” was also heard on iHeartMedia’s Class D daytimer WESC-AM 660 in Greenville via an LMA. With the LMA’s end, WTOB could be the new home.

What does the future hold for “Activa” listeners?

They can tune to the regional Mexican hot talk-fueled programming via Spartanburg-based WOLI-AM 910 and FM translator W289BS at 105.7 MHz, although both facilities do not reach points west of Greenville.
