MESA, ARIZ. — Under the leadership of Ed Munson, the news operation of Meredith Corp.’s CBS affiliated KPHO-5 and its news-intensive unaffiliated KTVK-3 has grown to be the largest in not only Phoenix, but in the entire state of Arizona.

Now, Munson is ready to kick back and reflect on his career accomplishments in retirement.

In an announcement made by Meredith on Tuesday, Munson will officially relinquish his role as VP/GM of KTVK and KPHO on Sept. 7, concluding a 40-year career in TV broadcasting.

Munson, 62, has enjoyed a career that includes a 17-year stint as VP/Sales for LIN Television Corp., now a part of the Nexstar family. He joined Meredith following his exit from LIN in 2008, taking his current role.

At Meredith, he helped direct the acquisition and integration of KTVK with the operations of KPHO. Today, KTVK is branded as “Arizona’s Family” and is highly regarded for its drive-time news blocks.

“I am honored to have led the incredible team at CBS5 and 3TV for the past 10 years,” said Munson. “We have seen our way through many historic transitions, including the creation of Meredith’s duopoly in Phoenix. I am grateful to everyone here and at Meredith for their support and will miss all of them.”

Patrick McCreery, President of Meredith Corporation’s Local Media Group, added, “Ed has been an outstanding leader for Arizona’s Family and all of Meredith stations. We are appreciative of Ed’s years of service and contributions to Meredith. He will be missed but his influence will be felt for years to come.”

Among the roles Munson has held is that of President/GM of WAVY-10 in Norfolk from 1995 to 2005. For 14 years before that, he was an VP/GM of the NBC affiliate and of FOX sister WVBT-TV in Norfolk. Before that, he was a LSM for Cox Broadcasting, from 1989-1992. From 1984-89, he was an account executive for WHAS-11 in Louisville, now owned by TEGNA.

Who is Munson’s successor? Meredith says it will conduct a national search to replace him.
