‘Improved’ LPFM Radio Service Technical Rules En Route

0

PORTLAND, ORE. — Scan across the FM radio dial in this Pacific Northwest metropolis, and you’ll get the usual fare — Blake Shelton on “99.5 The Wolf,” a Spin Doctors tune on “97.1 Charlie,” and Terry Boyd’s World on KGON-FM; Of Monsters and Men on KINK-FM and the Dana Cortez Show on WE96.3.

But, unlike most other cities of this size, you’ll also get the unusual fare. That’s thanks, in part, to no less than 11 LPFMs that serve the Portland-Vancouver-Beaverton metropolitan area — along with FM translators and full-service FMs.

Now, these LPFMs, along with others across the U.S., are getting some assistance with their technical rules. That’s thanks to the FCC, which has opened a docket to best address a matter that could impact — for better or for worse, in some cases — full-signal stations.
