Mags taken to task for e-cig ads


Magazine RackA posse of Democratic legislators have issued a report attacking a number of magazines with a large teen-aged audience for running ads that glorify the use of e-cigarettes.

The group includes Rep. Henry Waxman (D-CA), Rep. John Dingell (D-MI), Rep. Frank Pallone (D-NJ), and Rep. Diana DeGette (D-CO), and Sen. Tom Harkin (D-IA), Sen. Jay Rockefeller (D-WV), Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL), and Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT).

The chief offenders: Entertainment Weekly, Rolling Stone, US Weekly, People, and Time.

The report found that “tobacco companies continue to glamorize smoking in advertisements in magazines with large youth readership” and that “magazines frequently contain alluring images of smokers in their editorial content.”

The member stated, “We hope you will reconsider your policies and voluntarily act to reduce cigarette, e-cigarette, and other tobacco product advertising and cut the number of editorial and news images of cigarette, e-cigarette, and other tobacco product in your policies. Eliminating them will help reduce teen smoking, which is a goal we should all share.”
