New furloughs at Media General

All employees at Media General are going to get three extra weeks off the second half of this year. The rub is that the extra vacation time won’t be paid.

The mandatory furloughs are across the board. They apply to corporate headquarters, TV stations, newspapers and all other operations of the company. All Media General employees will have to take off 15 unpaid days in the second half of 2011.

In an email to employees on Thursday (6/23) CEO Marshall Morton said he had hoped to avoid repeating the furlough program this year, but expenses have to be cut to meet the company’s cash flow goal for the year – and the alternative would be layoffs.

Media General reported that newspaper, TV and digital revenues were all down in Q1.
