North Carolina air wars heat up for a week

The primaries in North Carolina are scheduled for Tuesday 5/4/10, and candidates seeking to run against incumbent Sen. Richard Burr (R-NC) are expected to spend whatever they have to get the nod.

According to CQ Politics, a former state senator, Cal Cunningham, has already spent close to $200K and has about $350K more in the bank. His main opponent, Secretary of State Elaine Marshall, was said to have spent south of $60K thus far and has a bit more than $170K in her warchest.

CQ says whichever Democrat prevails will come out of the contest with empty pockets, and will find Burr sitting there with over $5M – and the luxury of being able to spend some of it now and still have plenty left over for the sprint to November.
