NYSBA “Awards for Excellence in Broadcasting” presented

NYSBA / New York State Broadcasters AssociationThe New York State Broadcasters Association recognized outstanding achievement among New York’s radio and television stations at Monday night’s 47th “Awards for Excellence in Broadcasting.” The honors were handed out at The Sagamore Resort Hotel in Bolton Landing.


Competing against TV and radio stations from the Big Apple, WPIX-TV, the flagship station of The CW Television Network, received honors for “Outstanding Hard News Story” (Danger On The Water), “Outstanding Feature News Story” (Rotator Cuff Surgery), “Outstanding Locally Originated Newscast” (PIX News At Five) and “Outstanding Documentary Program” (Sandy: From Heartbreak to Hope). Fox affiliate WNYW-TV was recognized for “Outstanding Locally Produced TV Show” (Hamptons International Film Festival).

CBS Radio’s WNOW-FM NYC received recognition for “Outstanding Commercial” (Guiffre Auto Group — Forget About It), “Outstanding Promotion Announcement or Series” (We’re All Sandy Hook) and “Outstanding On-Air Broadcast Personality Or Team” (Zann On 92.3 NOW). Emmis Communications-owned WQHT-FM picked up an award for “Outstanding Station Sponsored Event” (Hot 97’s Summer Jam 2012 Nicki Minaj) and WNYM-AM was singled out for “Outstanding Sportscast” (Al Gattullo Sports Report).

Meanwhile, WFUV-FM, the region’s NPR affiliate, collected awards for “Outstanding Public Service Announcement/Campaign” (Striking a Chord), “Outstanding Public Affairs Program Or Series” (Cityscape), “Outstanding Spot News” (Sandy’s Aftermath), “Outstanding Feature Story” (Big Andy, Little Andy, And The Gift of Hope”) and “Outstanding Commentary/Editorial” (Roommating 101).

“Congratulations to these stations for receiving an Excellence in Broadcasting Awards,” said NYSBA President David Donovan. “This prestigious honor celebrates stations that provide good stewardship and excellent service to their communities. We admire and commend their efforts to serve the public interest.”

This year’s formal dinner also included Broadcaster of the Year award honors to Saturday Night Live Head Writer/Repertory Player Seth Meyers.  Congressman Peter King, chairman of the Homeland Security Subcommittee on Counterintelligence and Terrorism, was also named New Yorker of the Year for his work on the Superstorm Sandy relief effort.

Founded in 1955, the New York State Broadcasters Association (NYSBA) offers a variety of services to help the broadcasters of New York state better serve their communities. NYSBA also represents the interests of television and radio stations before the NYS Senate and Assembly, the US Congress, and various other legislative bodies.
