Post doubles down on Miami outpost

One television duopoly is going away and another is forming in Miami-Ft. Lauderdale. NBC/GE has O&Os NBC WTVJ-TV and Telemundo WSCV-TV, while the Washington Post already has ABC WPLG—TV. The NBC affiliate will be moving over to the Post, which will form a rare double-barrel Big Four network combo. Post-Newsweek Stations’ Alan Frank said, "We are pleased to be able to reach an agreement to purchase such a historic station as WTVJ, the first TV station to broadcast in Florida. We look forward to both WPLG and WTVJ continuing to serve the South Florida community."

RBR/TVBR observation: There need to be eight independent television voices in any DMA to support a TV duopoly, so the fact that NBC/GE will still be active as an owner actually helps make the proposed Post combination possible. But probably not necessary – there are a lot of stations and owners in this sprawling bilingual community.
