The only national distributor of Spanish-language news in public radio has signed off on a Consent Decree with the FCC’s Audio Division Chief, Al Shuldiner, that absolves the licensee of non-compliance with the Commission’s Public File Rule.
Radio Bilingue said yes to the Consent Decree in order to move forward with the license renewal of its 1kw Class B KERU-FM 88.5 in Blythe, Calif., a Colorado River community largely known as a resting place for drivers between Los Angeles and Phoenix.
Blythe and nearby Quartzsite, Ariz., are largely agricultural communities that are home to first-generation Latino immigrants. That’s the target audience of Radio Bilingue, offering NPR-style programming en español.
KERU’s license renewal was flagged for public file violations. They weren’t disclosed in a public notice regarding the consent decree. However, Radio Bilingue must adhere to a compliance plan as part of the agreement.
