U.S. broadcasters and emergency managers are gathering this week in New Orleans for a two-day affair focused on the voluntary use of NextGen TV advanced emergency information.

Among the topics of discussion at the two-day affair — integrating FM radio RDS alerting and NextGen TV AEI.

Introducing the AWARN New Orleans Roundtable, which is welcoming more than 60 local television broadcasters and emergency managers from the Gulf Coast Region on Wednesday (11/2) and Thursday.

The goal is not only to lay the groundwork for NextGen TV Advanced Emergency Information (AEI) but also to “reboot” the partnership between broadcasting and public safety.

Co-hosting with AWARN is the local PBS Member station, WYES-TV; the Louisiana Broadcasters Association; the Louisiana Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness; the New Orleans Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness; the Mississippi Association of Broadcasters; and the Alabama Broadcasters Association.

WYES is hosting the event at the station’s offices and studios at 916 Navarre Avenue.

“The AWARN Roundtables are a forum for broadcasters and local alert originators to
network and explore ways to work together to deliver geo-targeted, rich media
emergency information,” AWARN Executive Director John Lawson says. “Although NextGen TV will be highlighted, the real focus is building relationships.”

Sponsors are the Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC), the Louisiana
Broadcasters Association, LG Electronics/Zenith R&D Lab, One Media 3.0, The Weather Company and WYES.

Future AWARN Roundtables will be held in Washington, D.C., from December 7-8; in Raleigh from January 24-25, 2023; and in New York City on a forthcoming date in 2023.
