ON THURSDAY, ‘THE OFFICE’ IS THE #2 SHOW OF THE NIGHT IN ADULTS 18-49, BEHIND ONLY ‘GREY’S ANATOMY’

ON SATURDAY, THE ‘AT&T U.S. FIGURE SKATING CHAMPIONSHIPS’ IS UP 38 PERCENT IN 18-49 AND 32 PERCENT IN TOTAL VIEWERS VERSUS LAST YEAR’S COMPARABLE TELECAST

Paced by “The Office” and “The Biggest Loser,” NBC averaged a 1.7 rating, 4 share in 18-49 and 5.3 million viewers overall for the week of January 18-24, according to in-home viewing figures from Nielsen Media Research.

NBC’s Tuesday telecast of “The Biggest Loser: Couples” ranked #9 among all primetime programs this week in the key demographic of adults 18-49, despite competing with the Tuesday edition of “American Idol,” which was the top-ranked entertainment program of the week. “The Office” ranked #12 among all programs this week in adults 18-49 and ranked #5 among all primetime programs this week in adults 18-34 (rankings exclude NFL post-game telecasts).

Primetime averages for the week of January 18-24 in adults 18-49 were Fox (8.8/23), CBS (2.4/6), ABC (2.1/6), NBC (1.7/4) and CW (0.8/2). In overall total viewers the weekly averages were Fox (24.4 million), CBS (9.6 million), ABC (6.3 million), NBC (5.3 million) and CW (1.9 million).

NBC highlights for the week of January 18-24:

* On Saturday, NBC Sports’ coverage of the “AT&T U.S. Figure Skating Championships” increased from its first half-hour to its fourth by 114 percent in 18-49 rating and by 81 percent or 3.1 million persons in total viewers. Versus last year’s Saturday telecast, the event was up 38 percent in 18-49 rating and 32 percent or 1.3 million persons in total viewers

* “The Office” was the #2 show on television Thursday night in adults 18-49, behind only “Grey’s Anatomy.” In its time period, “The Office” ranked #1 among the major networks in men 18-49 and men 18-34 and #2 in adults 18-49 and other key demographic measures in a tough time period that included competition from ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy,” CBS’s “CSI” and Fox’s “Fringe.”

* On Tuesday, “The Biggest Loser: Couples” gained 28 percent in adults 18-49 and 23 percent in total viewers versus the prior week. Excluding finales and premieres, this was the top-rated “Biggest Loser” in adults 18-49 since March 2009, despite competition from “American Idol.”

* In its highly competitive two-hour time period, “Biggest Loser” ranked #2 in all key demographics – adults, men and women 18-34, 18-49 and 25-54 – behind only Fox’s “American Idol”-boosted line-up.

* From its first half-hour to its fourth, “Loser” increased by 44 percent in adults 18-49 and by 33 percent or 2.9 million persons in total viewers. For its second hour from 9-10 p.m. ET, “The Biggest Loser” ranked #1 in most key demos, including adults 18-34, adults 18-49 and adults 25-54. .

* Also on Tuesday, “The Jay Leno Show” ranked #1 or tied for #1 among the major networks in its time period in adults, men and women 18-34, men 18-49 and men 25-54 and #2 in adults 18-49, total viewers and all other key measures.

Ratings reflect “live plus same day” data unless otherwise noted. Season-to-date figures are averages of “live plus seven day” data except for the two most recent weeks, which are “live plus same day.” 

Additional NBC highlights for the week of January 18-24:

On Monday, January 18, from 8-9 p.m. ET, “Chuck” averaged a 2.5 rating, 6 share in adults 18-49 and 6.7 million viewers overall in a time period that included competition from Fox’s Monday premiere of “24,” ABC’s “The Bachelor” and CBS’s comedies, Compared to NBC’s average in the time period last season, “Chuck” was up 14 percent in 18-49 rating (2.5 vs. 2.2, live plus same day).

Monday from 9-10:01 p.m. ET, “Heroes” averaged a 1.8/4 in 18-49 and 4.0 million viewers overall in a time period that included competition from CBS’s “Two and a Half Men” and “Big Bang Theory,” ABC’s “The Bachelor” and Fox’s 24.”  “Heroes” is one of the most time-shifted programs on network television. So far this season, “Heroes” has added 29 percent to its 18-49 rating when going from its “live plus same day” to its “live plus seven day” results. In total viewers, “Heroes” adds more than 1.2 million viewers to its previously reported “live plus same day” results when “live plus seven day” ratings are released.

Monday from 10:01-11 p.m. ET, “The Jay Leno Show” averaged a 1.3/3 in adults 18-49, a 1.5/4 in adults 25-54 and 4.6 million viewers overall. Monday’s time-period competition included CBS’s CSI: Miami” and ABC’s Castle.” 

Comparisons with Jay Leno’s 2008-09 average at 11:35 p.m. ET on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” are: in adults 18-49 (1.3 vs. 1.4), adults 25-54 (1.5 vs. 1.8) and total viewers (4.6 million vs. 5.1 million). Comparisons to NBC’s Monday-through-Friday 10-11 p.m. ET non-sports average over the prior 52 weeks were: in adults 18-49 (1.3 vs. 2.2), adults 25-54 (1.5 vs. 2.7) and total viewers (4.6 million vs. 6.9 million).

On Tuesday, January 19 from 8-10:01 p.m. ET,   “The Biggest Loser: Couples” (4.1/11 in adults 18-49, 9.9 million viewers overall) gained 28 percent in 18-49 rating (4.1 vs. 3.2) and 23 percent in total viewers (9.9 million vs. 8.1 million) versus the prior week’s telecast. Excluding finales and premieres, this was the top-rated “Biggest Loser” in adults 18-49 since March 24, 2009.

In its highly competitive two-hour time period, “The Biggest Loser” ranked #2 in all key demographics – adults, men and women 18-34, 18-49 and 25-54 – behind only Fox’s “American Idol”-boosted line-up.

From its first half-hour to its fourth, “Loser” increased by 44 percent in adults 18-49 (to a 4.9/13 from a 3.4/9) and by 33 percent or 2.9 million persons in total viewers (11.5 million vs. 8.6 million). For its second hour from 9-10 p.m. ET, “The Biggest Loser” ranked #1 in most key demos – adults, men and women 18-34, adults, men and women 18-49 and adults and women 25-54.

Tuesday from 10:01-11 p.m. ET, “The Jay Leno Show” averaged a 1.9/6 in adults 18-49, a 2.3/6 in adults 25-54 and 6.0 million viewers overall. Tuesday’s time-period competition included CBS’s “The Good Wife” encore and ABC’s rebroadcast of “The Forgotten.” In the time period, the “Leno Show” ranked #1 or tied for #1 among the major networks in adults, men and women 18-34, men 18-49 and men 25-54 and #2 in adults 18-49, total viewers and all other key measures.

Comparisons with Jay Leno’s 2008-09 average at 11:35 p.m. ET on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” are: in adults 18-49 (1.9 vs. 1.4), adults 25-54 (2.3 vs. 1.8) and total viewers (6.0 million vs. 5.1 million). On Wednesday, January 20 from 8-9 p.m. ET, “Mercy” averaged a 1.4/4 in adults 18-49 and 5.9 million viewers overall in a time period that included competition from Fox’s “American Idol,” CBS’s first-run comedies and ABC’s comedy encores.

Wednesday from 9-10:01 p.m. ET, an encore telecast of “Law and Order: Special Victims Unit” averaged a 1.4/4 in adults 18-49 and 5.5 million viewers overall in a time period that included competition from CBS’s “Criminal Minds,” Fox’s “Human Target” and ABC’s “Modern Family” and Cougar Town.” From its first half-hour to its second, the “SVU” rebroadcast increased by 15 percent in 18-49 rating (1.5 vs. 1.3) and by 18 percent in adults 26-54 (2.0 vs. 1.7).

Wednesday from 10:01-11 p.m. ET, “The Jay Leno Show” averaged a 1.2/4 in adults 18-49, a 1.6/4 in adults 25-54 and 4.5 million viewers overall. Wednesday’s time-period competition included CBS’s “CSI: NY” and ABC’s “Ugly Betty.”  In the time period, “Jay Leno” ranked #2 among the major networks in all key adult-male demographics – men 18-34, 18-49 and 25-54.

Comparisons to Jay Leno’s 2008-09 average at 11:35 p.m. ET on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” were: in adults 18-49 (1.2 vs. 1.4), adults 25-54 (1.6 vs. 1.8) and total viewers (4.5 million vs. 5.1 million). On Thursday, January 21 from 8-8:30 p.m. ET, “Community” (2.1/6 in adults 18-49, 4.8 million viewers overall) ranked #2 or tied for #2 among the major networks in the adults 18-49, adults 18-34, men 18-49 and men 18-34. ).  It is worth noting that so far this season, “Community” has added 25 percent to its 18-49 rating when going from its “live plus same day” to its “live plus seven day” results. 

From 8:30-9 p.m., “Parks and Recreation” (2.0/5 in 18-49, 4.4 million viewers overall) ranked #2 among the major networks in adults and men 18-34. It’s worth noting that, “Parks and Recreation” has added 20 percent to its 18-49 rating this season when going from its “live plus same day” to its “live plus seven day” results.

Thursday from 9-9:31 p.m. ET, “The Office” (3.7/9 in 18-49, 7.3 million viewers overall) was the #2 show of the night in adults 18-49, behind only “Grey’s Anatomy.” In its time period, “The Office” ranked #1 among the major networks in men 18-49 and men 18-34 and #2 in adults 18-49, adults 18-34 and other key demographic measures in a tough time period that included competition from ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy,” CBS’s “CSI” and Fox’s “Fringe.” “The Office” is a heavily time-shifted show, adding an average 28 percent to its 18-49 rating so far this season when going from its “live plus same day” to its “live plus seven day” results.  In total viewers, “The Office” adds more than 1.9 million viewers to its previously reported “live plus same day” results when “live plus seven day” ratings are released

From 9:31-10:01 p.m. ET, “30 Rock” (2.7/7 in 18-49, 5.5 million viewers overall) ranked #1 among the major networks in its highly competitive time period in men 18-34, tied for #1 in men 18-49 and #2 in adults and women 18-34. “30 Rock” is a heavily time-shifted program, so far this season adding an average 25 percent to its 18-49 rating when going from its “live plus same day” to its “live plus seven day” results.  In total viewers, “30 Rock” adds more than 1.3 million viewers to its previously reported “live plus same day” results when “live plus seven day” ratings are released.

Thursday from 10:01-11 p.m. ET, “The Jay Leno Show” averaged a 1.4/4 in adults 18-49, a 1.6/4 in adults 25-54 and 4.5 million viewers overall. Thursday’s time-period competition included ABC’s “Private Practice” and CBS’s “The Mentalist.” Week-to-week, the Thursday “Leno Show” was up 8 percent in 18-49 rating (1.4 vs. 1.3)

Comparisons to Jay Leno’s 2008-09 average at 11:35 p.m. ET on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” were: in adults 18-49 (1.4 vs. 1.4), adults 25-54 (1.6 vs. 1.8) and total viewers (4.5 million vs. 5.1 million). Comparisons to NBC’s Monday-through-Friday 10-11 p.m. ET non-sports average over the prior 52 weeks were: in adults 18-49 (1.4 vs. 2.2), adults 25-54 (1.6 vs. 2.7) and total viewers (4.5 million vs. 6.9 million).

On Friday, January 22 from 8-10 p.m., NBC and other broadcast and cable networks carried the “Hope for Haiti” special, which was sustaining. Ratings for the special are not included in the nightly or weekly averages.

Friday from 10-11 p.m. ET, “Dateline NBC” (1.4/5 in adults 18-49, 5.0 million viewers overall) ranked #2 among the major networks in adults 18-49 and total viewers and #1 or tied for #1 in adults 18-34, men 18-34, men 18-49 and men 25-54.

On Saturday, January 23 from 8-9 p.m. ET, an encore telecast of “Mercy” averaged a 0.4/1 in 18-49 and 1.9 million viewers overall.

Saturday from 9-11 p.m. ET, NBC Sports’ coverage of the “AT&T U.S. Figure Skating Championships” averaged a 1.1/3 in adults 18-49 and 5.4 million viewers overall. From its first half-hour to its fourth, the skating coverage increased by 114 percent in 18-49 rating (to a 1.5 from a 0.7) and by 81 percent or more than 3.1 million persons in total viewers (to 7.0 million from 3.9 million).

(In its concluding hour from 10-11 p.m. ET, the “AT&T U.S. Figure Skating Championships” ranked #1 among the major networks in adults 18-49 (tie), adults, men and women 18-34, men 18-49 and men 25-54 (tie).

Versus last year’s telecast on Saturday, Jan. 24, 2009, the event this year was up 38 percent in 18-49 rating (1.1 vs. 0.8) and 32 percent or 1.3 million persons in total viewers (5.4 million vs. 4.1 million).

On Sunday, January 24, from 7-9 p.m. ET, “Dateline NBC” (0.7/2 in 18-49, 4.0 million viewers overall) increased from its first half-hour to its fourth by 50 percent in 18-49 rating (to a 0.9 from a 0.6) and by 32 percent or more than 1.1 million persons in total viewers despite competition that included the NFL’s NFC Championship Game.

Sunday from 9-11 p.m. ET, NBC Sports’ coverage of the “AT&T U.S. Figure Skating Championships” averaged a 0.6/1 in adults 18-49 and 3.6 million viewers overall. From its first half-hour to its fourth, the skating coverage increased its overall viewership by 34 percent or more than 1.0 million persons (to 4.2 million from 3.2 million) opposite the NFC Championship Game coverage.
