AVENTURA, FLA. — With the Memorial Day weekend now upon us and the end of an important fiscal year set for Sunday at business based on agricultural calendars (including General Mills, where a friend will be working from home and sitting in on a Sunday conference call), retailers of all goods and services will be looking for a big sales burst.


But, what about all of those stores at the mall? Even at big shopping destinations such as Aventura Mall, the largest tourist destination in all of Florida (it’s true, look it up), traffic was light on Thursday night. OK, mostly.

While the specialty stores lining corridor after corridor had practically no foot traffic, department stores did. This reinforces a report this week from eMarketer that arrives at the same conclusion: Don’t count out department stores just yet.
