Under the leadership of FCC Chairman Ajit Pai, “AM revitalization” is perhaps at its zenith. Thanks to the use of FM translators, many stations limited to kHz-based broadcasts have found new life.
Also benefiting from the rapid expansion of FM translators are companies that seek a widely accessible on-air home for a HD multicast channel, given the failure of the radio broadcasting industry to bring HD Radio to consumers in the same manner DAB revolutionized radio listening in the United Kingdom and across much of Western Europe.
Among those profiting from an FM translator is Rahul Walia. He’s now the owner of an operation that is about to make history: It’s the first FM facility to transmit programming from One World Trade Center.
