WISH Granted: More On-Air Diversity In The Newsroom

Under new owner DuJuan McCoy, on-air diversity is a goal — just as diversity in broadcast ownership is for the President/CEO of Circle City Broadcasting.

Now, the News Director at Circle City’s affiliate of The CW Network in Indianapolis, Al Carl, has announced that the first TV journalist dedicated exclusively “to covering stories affecting Indiana’s diverse population” has been hired.

Look out, Oprah.

Serving as News 8’s Multicultural Reporter is Katiera Winfrey.

“Katiera will report on issues and topics, ranging from serious to positive news, from different cultural perspectives,” Carl said.

Katiera will focus on, but not be limited to, news and issues of concern to women, millennials, Hispanics and Latinos, African Americans, Asian Americans, Middle Eastern Americans, Native Americans, and the LGBTQ community.

“This new position marks a commitment on the part of WISH-TV to showcase Indiana communities and people of all cultures in a profound way,” Carl added.

Winfrey returns to WISH-TV after beginning her career behind the scenes at News 8 in 2010. She later worked at stations in Houston, Odessa, and Tyler, Texas; Tulsa, Okla.; and WFMZ-69 in Reading, Pa.  She grew up in Indianapolis and is a member of the National Association of Black Journalists.

“Our Multicultural Reporter is just one of several specialized journalists we’re adding to our newsroom that are very much needed in the eyes of our viewers,” McCoy said. “Katiera’s Indianapolis roots, reporting experience and passion to shine a light on our rich multicultural community will all be to the benefit of our viewers.  We are fortunate to have Katiera join our staff, and I am eager to watch her stories unfold across all our content platforms.”

Winfrey said, “Not only is returning home a blessing for me and my family, but I’m equally excited and honored to be the state’s first dedicated Multicultural Reporter,” said Winfrey. “I’m very eager to report on and share the many unique multicultural stories that are not currently getting the coverage they deserve.”

She may or may not be related to Oprah Winfrey, her WFMZ-69 biography reads.
