Kennedy gives Interep a thumbs up
Another satisfied customer has stepped forward to counter the bashing that Interep has gotten from some quarters in recent weeks. In his quarterly conference call, Susquehanna Media CEO David Kennedy noted that an 11% improvement in national sales was included in Susquehanna Radio's 4% revenue gain in Q1, with local up 2%. And
Kennedy made a point of telling the analysts that Interep reps his stations. Kennedy said San Francisco was the big growth market in Q1, with strength also in Atlanta and Indianapolis. Susquehanna had reported its Q1 numbers earlier this week (5/17/05 RBR #97). In the Q&A period with analysts, Kennedy said Clear Channel's Less is More initiative is benefiting the entire industry, but he added that the LIM impact varies from market to market. As you'd expect, there were questions about the plan to auction off Susquehanna's radio and cable properties, along with its parent company's pottery operation. But Kennedy said there was nothing new to report - - that the company's investment bankers are still putting together information to send out to potential bidders. He also refused to comment on Q2 pacings, since Susquehanna never gives out any forward guidance.

Top station list is all Apples and Angels
BIA Financial Network's latest listing of America's top billing radio stations is a strictly a bicoastal affair, and with one exception, a two-company affair as well. Emmis Communications managed to sneak one onto a list otherwise dominated by Clear Channel and Infinity. New York played host to the top two billing stations in 2004 and in total, split the top ten list evenly with Los Angeles at five apiece. Clear Channel was #1 with WLTW-FM, followed by Infinity and its WINS-AM. Infinity lead in LA with KROQ-FM, followed by CCU's KFI-AM. Emmis snagged #5 with KPRW-FM LA. Infinity had three of the remaining five slots, to CCU's two. BIAfn's Mark Fratrik said that lackluster growth patterns have made it difficult for stations to execute a major leap in the rankings. "With the total industry revenues increasing at below 3% in 2004, it is difficult for a station to make enough of a big leap to overtake the top stations in the industry," he said.

Limbaugh fingers media's fear
Three of the big four broadcasting networks - - only Fox was excepted - - made a short but significant list of media outlets put together by Rush Limbaugh on his 5/17/05 radio broadcast. It is not a pretty topic that brought the companies together. The talkmeister lumped the companies together based on their common lack of comprehension and as well as their common fear. You may have missed it, but watchdog Media Matters for America did not - - the transcript is from MMA's website (actual audio is also available there). Here goes: "They do not understand the threat to Western civilization - - not just America, Western civilization - - posed by militant Islamists," said Limbaugh, "because to Newsweek to Time to ABC to CBS to NBC to The New York Times to The Washington Post, the real threat to America is Christianity. Now, if that doesn't help you put that in perspective, nothing will. That's who they think threatens this country. That's the religion they really fear - - is Christianity." Just thought you'd want to know.

Glenn Beck, the Philadelphia Strangler?
On the very same day Limbaugh was 'splaining the focus of the mainstream media, fellow CCU stable Talkmeister Glenn Beck was daydreaming about throttling documentarian Michael Moore to death. "Hang on, let me just tell you what I'm thinking," he said. "I'm thinking about killing Michael Moore, and I'm wondering if I could kill him myself, or if I would need to hire somebody to do it. No, I think I could. I think he could be looking me in the eye, you know, and I could just be choking the life out - - is this wrong? I stopped wearing my What Would Jesus band- - Do, and I've lost all sense of right and wrong now. I used to be able to say, 'Yeah, I'd kill Michael Moore,'and then I'd see the little band: What Would Jesus Do? And then I'd realize, 'Oh, you wouldn't kill Michael Moore. Or at least you wouldn't choke him to death.' And you know, well, I'm not sure." The incident was also reported on the Media Matters for America website, with audio available.

RBR observation: In all fairness, there was a similar slip-up over at liberal Air America, during the Randi Rhodes Show, not too long ago. We're basically with George Carlin on this: If you want to talk about indecent programming, this sort of stuff is far more indecent than some stuck-in-adolescence shock jock coming up with new words for flatulence. Just our opinion.

Adelphia settlement OKed
A federal bankruptcy judge has given his blessing to Adelphia Communications paying 715 million to settle lawsuits by investors who lost money from the company's collapse (4/26/05 RBR #82). Members of the Rigas family who were blamed for the financial scandal, have also agreed to hand over more than a billion in assets. Approval of the lawsuits settlement is one of the few remaining roadblocks to the sale of Adelphia's cable TV systems to Comcast and Time Warner for 17.6 billion. Adelphia's lone radio station has already been sold to Entercom.

UPN unveils 2005-2006 fall lineup
UPN unveiled its 2005-2006 fall lineup featuring three new shows, headlined by an aggressive scheduling move on Thursday night with "Everybody hates Chris," leading off a new comedy block, it was announced yesterday at Madison Square Garden by Dawn Ostroff, President, UPN. This move of scheduling comedies on Thursdays is underscored by the fact that UPN has never had regularly scheduled episodic programming on this night. Additionally, the lineup serves as good counter programming on a night where UPN is the only network with a two-hour block of comedies. In addition to Everybody hates Chris, UPN will also broadcast the new comedy Love, Inc., with Shannen Doherty and Holly Robinson Peete, and a new drama, Sex, Lies & Secrets, with Denise Richards leading the ensemble cast. UPN is returning nine established series, including reality hit America's Next Top Model; Veronica Mars; Girlfriends, Eve, One on One, Cuts, All of Us, Half & Half and WWF Smackdown!

Wendy's launches new campaign
in wake of finger fiasco

Wendy's, hard-hit by the recent incident in which a woman claimed to have found a human finger in an order of chili, unveiled a new campaign it hopes will help revitalize sales. The ads come six months after Wendy's pulled its "Mr. Wendy" campaign, which failed to drive traffic. Wendy's new TV spots, print and Internet ads reveal the tag, tagline "Do What Tastes Right." Some highlight the choices customers can make when ordering combo meals, such as choosing a side salad or baked potato rather than fries, while others focus on the company's Spicy Chicken sandwich. The new ads will debut during season finales of "Alias," "American Idol" and "Lost" on 5/25. A quirky web cartoon featuring a square living in a world filled with circles has already appeared online. The "Good To Be Square" campaign (www.goodtobesquare.com) has not yet been linked to Wendy's, where hamburgers are square, not round, but will be branded once the new TV spots debut.

NAR launches campaign for small business health plans
The National Association of Realtors is launching a 1.2 million advertising campaign this week to urge Congress to pass legislation that would give small business employees access to the same quality group health insurance plans currently available to union workers and employees of large corporations. The radio spot will run starting today through the end of July in DC on WTOP, WGMS, WMAL and WTNT. Print ads will run in Roll Call, The Hill, National Journal and Congressional Quarterly this week through the end of July. Ads will also run in the online editions of The Washington Post and The Washington Times starting next week. The ads read in part, "Our over 1 million members care deeply about the hometown communities we represent. So we're urging Congress to pass the Small Business Health Fairness Act that gives small businesses and the self-employed the opportunity to purchase affordable health insurance coverage. After all, small businesses generate well over 60 percent of all new jobs. Their businesses may be small, but together, their power drives our economy."

AKQA creates XBOX 360 interface
Microsoft has chosen interactive shop AKQA as its global online advertising AOR for the Xbox business. An unusual aspect of the relationship is the agency was directly involved in creating the user interface for the Xbox 360 console. The Xbox 360 user interface, or UI as it is called, lets gamers use the console as a hub for their home-entertainment needs, accessing the Internet, music, photos, movies and instant messaging. It also carries the user online to play games with others across the Web. And it can be customized to each user's individual needs.

Media Markets & MoneyTM
Citadel gets the Picayune of the Big Easy litter
Farid Suleman's group is spending over 7M to snag a fringe FM to add to its New Orleans station cluster. WKSY-FM will be the fourth station in a deal which is also contingent on a pair of FM spin-offs. The seller is Guaranty Broadcasting Company. Paperwork filed at the FCC pegged the price at 7M, but Media Services Group broker George Reed, who handled the deal for the seller, told RBR another 500K will go to Guaranty for the tower. Interestingly, closing this deal hinges on closure of Citadel's 4.5M sale of WOPR-FM La Combe LA & WPRF-FM Reserve LA to Wayne Dowdy's Southeastern Broadcasting (4/11/05 RBR #71). Now this deal will take WKSY out of an LMA with the very same Dowdy. The station, licensed to the northeast of town, on the other side of Lake Pontchartrain, and the other side of the state line in Picayune MS, will cluster up with Citadel's KKND-FM, KMEZ-FM & WDVW-FM in the market. WKSY is not part of the market in strictly Arbitron territorial terms, but its owners have always treated it as an NO station, which is how Citadel treated it in its consolidation documentation.

Congressional media caucus to host Moyers
Maurice Hinchey's (D-NY) Future of American Media Caucus (FAM) is hosting former PBS icon Bill Moyers to address denizens of Capitol Hill and the press next week. His topic: "The State of the American Media." Moyers has been highly critical of that state, and included numerous sessions on media consolidation and other related items on his former PBS program "NOW with Bill Moyers." FAM now claims 19 congressional members - - it's aim is to shed light on media topics as a considerable docketload of legislation works its way through the Hill this year. Moyers will appear at the Longworth Building Tuesday, 5/24/05 at 4PM eastern time.

The problem with XM and Sirius both is that they are living on borrowed time. It doesn't matter whether they run in the red OR the black (5/17/05 RBR #97). Very soon carmakers will begin to consolidate all of the in-car navigation systems they now offer with new in-car Internet service (already available in about 4% of cars worldwide and on just about every cell phone in the world). When that becomes standard or near-standard equipment, who's going to pay twelve bucks a month to listen to commercial-free radio when they can stream it on their in-car Internet for free? Unless XM and Sirius both have a game plan to convert to large scale in-car internet providers, they will go the way of other auto dinosaurs like quadraphonic speakers and 8-track tape players.

Editor's note: Agreed. Wireless broadband is going to present a challenge to terrestrial radio broadcasters, but it will wipe out satellite radio, lock, stock and barrel.

Shake-up at Arbitron
Arbitron eliminated its Outdoor division, pink-slipping sales chief Joan Gerberding and her top staff and putting the half-dozen or so sales reps under the Cable division. Now Arbitron has told staffers it is closing down its New York Marketing Communications office. Those four people are being given opportunities to apply for their jobs again, but they'll have to move. The department will now be consolidated in Columbia, MD, with the employee count now approaching 20. RBR observation: Arbitron once did a local market ratings test for Outdoor, any ratings product for outdoor, likely involving PPM, is years in the future. Both Arbitron and Nielsen have hopes of providing new products to measure Outdoor - - but somebody will have to agree to pay the bill before they're rolled out. The justification for the Marketing Communications consolidation is obvious - - it's a lot cheaper to have everybody in one place and when it comes to operating costs, Columbia, MD beats Manhattan hands down. And if is also a sign of preparing for a M&A, but don't jump the gun, yet but it will happen. 05/19/05 RBR #99

RBR First
Saga dumping Hannity
Ed Christian is putting his money where his mouth is. Not only has Saga Communications dropped the "Dr. Laura Show" and Glenn Haege's "Handyman" from its stations because they also air on satellite radio RBR has learned firt that Saga has also served notice on ABC Radio Networks that it is canceling its affiliations for the "Sean Hannity Show," which airs on XM Satellite Radio. "I stand on principle. What I said is what I'm doing," Christian told RBR. Hannity currently airs on two Saga's WINA-AM Charlottesville, VA and WTAX-AM Springfield, IL. ABC isn't letting Saga out of its contracts, but Christian says Hannity will be off both stations with their contracts run out the end of this year. RBR observation: We've been hearing lots of support in the terrestrial radio industry for Saga's tough stand. What we haven't heard, though, is anyone else actually canceling a major syndicated show like Hannity to enforce the view that market exclusivity means just that - - no other radio broadcast in my market, AM, FM or satellite. Look for lots more battling on this front regarding sports rights, where major group owners are more than a little disturbed that XM and Sirius are now poaching the play-by-play rights that they've already paid big bucks for. Interesting that Saga is also in agreement with their colleague Perry Sook at Nexstar who pulled the plug on the cable MSO's is a some what similar move dealing with content. Both operators are in the medium to small category but they fight the! fight as the big just give it the lip. Yep, problem here big time as Christian knows that content is king and if it is duplicated then you have zippo. 05/19/05 RBR #99
