PBS inserting spots into the middle of programming
Are you aware of PBS inserting commercials into the middle of its programming-both streaming and on-air? Well they currently are for streaming and the TV broadcast inserts are coming. Many local broadcasters probably don't even know that the pubcaster is set to dip into their pockets. Instead of airing breaks every 50 minutes, as PBS does now, it will air them every 15 minutes beginning this fall.
RBR-TVBR observation: There is a fine line already between regular spots and what PBS has been running. But traditionally, they've been limited to the beginning and end of the shows. PBS needs to consider the drop off of audience when these spots hit the fan: "I just donated $100 dollars to this station so I wouldn't have to see ads!" More...

No affiliate love for retrans sharing
Rupert Murdoch found very little support among RBR-TVBR poll respondents for his idea that Fox, or any other network, should get 75% of the retransmission consent payments that cable/satellite companies make to local TV stations. For several days not a single vote was registered for the 75% level, but a handful of votes were finally cast for that option. (Did Rupert cast a vote?) The largest group of voters said affiliate stations should keep 100%, but a combined majority went for something in the 25-50% range.

MagnaGlobal revises 2011 US forecast downward
MagnaGlobal now expects media suppliers to generate $173.1 billion dollars of ad revenues in 2011-that's downward from +3.1% to +2.9%, excluding the impact of political and Olympic advertising. While the company sees the disruption from the earthquake in Japan and high gas prices as temporary, the economy still suffers from a depressed housing market, sluggish employment conditions, and fiscal retrenchment at all levels of government. Flawed FCC fine appeal denied
Tennessee Technological University has gotten a lesson in the need to study regulations as well as technology. First it got fined by the FCC, and now has gotten smacked down for not following procedures with its appeal. Oh, and the appeal was denied.
RBR-TVBR observation: From years of reporting on FCC fines, what stands out is that most of them could have been easily avoided. All that is required is that a licensee make the effort to learn the FCC's rules and be sure to maintain the correct paperwork, file the correct forms on time, make the correct payments and always follow the directions. Pandora CEO says he's not focused on stock price
RBR-TVBR observation: Kennedy spoke of improving margins and cash flow. Did he read his own Q1 report? The quarterly conference calls that Pandora execs will now be having with Wall Street analysts should be interesting if their cash flow performance keeps going the wrong direction - particularly if they try to not talk about the financials as the CEO did in the FBN interview.

Good buyer interest expected for McGraw-Hill TV stations
Calling the McGraw-Hill Broadcasting stations now up for sale a "well managed group," media investment banker Michael Alcamo tells RBR-TVBR he expects the properties to command a strong multiple in today's market. And he expects to see quite a few would-be buyers bidding for individual stations, rather than the entire group.

iBiquity announces multicast channel incentive program
RBR-TVBR observation: We suggest that the stations and/or AEs might want to include deals they've made to broker the channels out completely to foreign language broadcasters or other entities, as that is being done as well. This practice is good for the broadcasters but might not be so good for HD Radio as an industry down the road.

NBC's planned Playboy program under attack again
RBR-TVBR observation: NBC must realize that it's playing with fire here - this program is going to be a protest magnet, as it has proven before it has shown any inclination whatsoever to play near the edge of the FCC indecency regs. However, we can't help noticing that it is scheduled for safe harbor in the Eastern and Pacific time zones.
