Pandora's Wall Street debut was a bust
You may have read uninformed commentary elsewhere that Pandora Media's IPO may not be busted because the stock price could still rally back to the IPO price. Sorry folks, it doesn't work that way.
RBR-TVBR observation: At this point it may be optimistic to project that Pandora will be able to post a net profit in 2014. You first have to post an operating profit before you can think about getting to a net profit. RBR-TVBR seems to be the only one to notice that Pandora's operating (negative) cash flow moved the wrong way - and big time - in fiscal Q1 after improving last year. More...

CNN sued for not offering online captioning in online video
CNN.com has been sued in an Alameda, CA County lawsuit 6/15 for discriminating against the hard-of-hearing by failing to provide closed captions for videos posted on the Internet, reports The San Francisco Chronicle. CNN.com displays hundreds of short news and information videos at any given time. Some have appeared on television with closed captions available for the hearing-impaired, but they carry no captions online, the suit said.
RBR-TVBR observation: As more and more Americans get their news online, the need for closed captioning increases. Most likely, CNN and other sites like it will eventually provide the closed captioning, but it is expensive. More...

FCC reverses decision, grants FM upgrade to WPKE-FM
The Commission's Audio Division staff had a change of heart for East Kentucky Broadcasting's WPKE-FM, Coal Run, Kentucky, which asked for a change from 103.1 mHz (Class A) to 92.1 mHz (Class C3) at a new transmitter site, and a modification of its license. The FCC originally denied East Kentucky's Petition for Rule Making and it promptly filed a Petition for Reconsideration. Dickenson County Broadcasting, licensee of WDIC-FM (also on 92.1), Clinchco, VA, jumped in and filed an Opposition to Petition for Reconsideration, and East Kentucky filed a Reply to Opposition to Petition for Reconsideration. Got all that?
RBR-TVBR observation: We can see why WDIC would jump in and fight this. Any time a frequency change takes place, you are going to likely lose some listeners. More...

Pandora Media
IPO is busted
RBR-TVBR observation: What an embarrassment for the NYSE. The exchange was so hot to trot with this Internet darling that it awarded a rare and coveted single-letter stock ticker, "P," to a company with a tiny public float and no clear plan to ever turn cash flow positive, much less post a net profit. Is it now headed for penny stock territory?

HD Radio goes
south of the border
iBiquity's HD Radio is hardly a newcomer to Mexico. Stations in border areas have already been authorized to use the digital radio system already in widespread use in the United States. Now, though, HD Radio is officially sanctioned for all of Mexico.

Freedom sale reported
back to square one
RBR-TVBR observation: It is just so difficult to value newspapers, given that the industry has seen revenues decline for 19 straight quarters - with no one able to predict when that string will finally end. In that environment, even 4x would make some bankers nervous. But 8x for the TV group seems the low end of what we keep hearing as deal talk.

PBS inserting spots into the middle of programming
Instead of airing breaks every 50 minutes it will air them every 15 minutes beginning this fall.
RBR-TVBR observation: There is a fine line already between regular spots and what PBS has been running. But traditionally, they've been limited to the beginning and end of the shows. PBS needs to consider the drop off of audience when these spots hit the fan: "I just donated $100 dollars to this station so I wouldn't have to see ads!"

Streaming heading
toward felony status
RBR-TVBR observation: No one really believes that federal prosecutors would be anxious to fill the prisons with people streaming from their homes, but the threat of jail time would certainly help dissuade copyright infringers who are caught at it from resuming their illegal streaming.

Flawed FCC fine
appeal denied
RBR-TVBR observation: From years of reporting on FCC fines, what stands out is that most of them could have been easily avoided. All that is required is that a licensee make the effort to learn the FCC's rules and be sure to maintain the correct paperwork, file the correct forms on time, make the correct payments and always follow the directions.
